Blackduck Legion splits doubleheader with Staples
STAPLES -- The Blackduck American Legion baseball team split a doubleheader against Staples Monday night, dropping the first game 11-1 before winning the second game 11-4.
Blackduck, now 8-9 overall, is 2-5 in district play with one game remaining at Sebeka. Depending on how the rest of the games play out for Blackduck, they will likely be playing in the Sub-District play-in game Friday night.
In Monday's opener, Blackduck fell behind early.
Staples took a 5-1 lead in the second inning before scoring six runs with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning to end the game with the mercy rule.
Blackduck had three hits, including doubles by Dylan Weisert and Jake Krabbenhoft. Evan Weisert singled in the third inning.
Jacob Peterson took the loss for Blackduck while Andrew Nissen threw in the fifth inning.
Jalen Busker got the win for Staples with eight strikeouts and five walks.
In the nightcap, things got better for Blackduck in an 11-4 win.
In the nightcap Matthew Patch pitched out of trouble in every inning but the fifth. Staples left seven runners on base, six in scoring position. Patch walked three, struck out six and scattered five hits, all singles, to get the victory.
Blackduck erupted for six runs in the fourth inning and sealed the deal with two more in the fifth.
Krabbenhoft, Patch and the Weisert brothers each had two hits. Krabbenhoft doubled in a runner in the second and Dylan Weisert tripled in two in the big fourth.
Trevor Smith singled to open the second inning.
Blackduck is now 8-9 overall and take on Sebeka today in its final regular-season game.
Sub District playoff begin on Friday July 12 at the fourth seeded site.
The playoffs then move to Park Rapids on July 15 and 17. It will be a four team double elimination. The top two teams move onto the District tournament which will be in Browerville, July 24-26.
