Blackduck advances in Section 8A baseball playoffs
BLACKDUCK — The Blackduck High School baseball team took its first step toward successfully defending its Section 8A title Tuesday when the Drakes eliminated Red Lake 11-1 here.
Blackduck enters the post-season seeded No. 1 in the East Sub-Section. Red Lake was ranked eighth in the field.
The Drakes have reached the double-elimination portion of the tournament and will continue their quest for a section crown 10 a.m. Thursday when they will face either No. 4 Kelliher-Northome or No. 5 Remer at the Bemidji State diamond. The Mustangs and Remer battled Tuesday night.
Also Tuesday Lake of the Woods (No. 3) hosted Cass Lake-Bena (No. 6) and Walker-Hackensack-Akeley (No. 2) entertained Laporte (No. 7). The winners of those two games will square off 12:30 p.m. Thursday at BSU.
The double-elimination event will continue at BSU Thursday. The sub-section winner’s bracket final will be played at 3 p.m. whiles the losers of Thursday’s early play will meet in an elimination contest at 5:30 p.m.
Red Lake opened the scoring at Blackduck Tuesday night on a hit batter, Ryan Holthusen’s single and an error on Marcus Beaulieu’s grounder.
That would be the only run the Warriors would muster, however.
Blackduck answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. Matt Patch began the inning with a walk and scored courtesy of Dylan Weisert’s double. A pair of wild pitches eventually plated Weisert.
The Drakes tallied once in the second as Jake Krabbenhoft forced Andrew Nissen at second and later scored when Patch singled.
Jake Peterson walked to open the third inning and eventually scored on a wild pitch.
Blackduck ended the game via the 10-run rule in the bottom of the sixth as the Drakes scored seven runs with the aid of an error, three walks and singles by Nissen, Mitch Sparby and Dylan Dexter.
Tuesday’s victory upped Blackduck’s record to 13-2. Red Lake ended its campaign 0-9.
