BIRCHMONT: Sheetz tops Palmiscno for Women's crown
BEMIDJI -- Katie Sheetz of Grand Rapids rallied from a 1-down deficit at the turn to edge Jenna Palmiscno of Bemidji 2-up in Saturday's Birchmont Women's Championship match.
Sheetz was making her first trip to the Birchmont while Palmiscno came up short in her fourth finals match.
"I knew I could win if I played well but I also knew that if Jenna played well she could win," Sheetz said. "I'm not surprised that the match went to the 18th hole."
Saturday's final was tight from the outset. Sheetz claimed the first hole with a par but Palmiscno captured No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 with pars.
Sheetz was within one hole at the turn and wins at 10, 12 and 13 gave her a 2-up lead.
Palmiscno drew within 1-down when Sheetz' approach on No. 15 found the hazard behind the green and pars by both players on No. 16 and No. 17 kept the outcome in doubt.
Both players hit their approaches on No. 18 into a bunker but Sheetz succeeded on her up-and-down to preserve her victory.
"I knew that Jenna was a good player but I've played many match-play tournaments before so I wasn't concerned about her experience being a factor," Sheetz said. "In fact, I don't know why but I was more nervous in my other matches this week than I was for the final.
"It was nice to end the match by making a putt rather than by having Jenna miss a putt," Sheetz added. "Overall, I had a very good week and I'll definitely be back next year."
In Saturday's consolation championship match Morgan Miller of Bemidji defeated Mikki Kromy of Grand Rapids 2-up.
