Birchmont: Miller wins her first match in Women's division
BEMIDJI -- Morgan Miller admits that composure throughout all 18 holes is not normally one of her strengths. During Wednesday's first round of match-play in the Women's Championship division, however, Miller overcame all of her mental obstacles.
"My biggest problem on the golf course is nerves," Miller said."I have played many tournaments this summer trying to shake those nerves and I think it's working. I'm playing better and with more consistency."
Miller, who will be a junior at Bemidji High School this fall, qualified with an 87 but on Wednesday she defeated Hannah Erickson of St. Cloud who shot 84 in the qualifying round.
"I shot 42 on the front and I was, maybe, at 33 when we stopped with two holes to play," she said of Wednesday's victory. "My concern really isn't about keeping track of my score. My dad (Ryce) was my caddie and he kept score. I just concentrated on playing my game and I was happy with the way I played."
Miller's next test comes today when she will square off against Jenna Palmiscno of Bemidji.
"I'm very excited about Wednesday's win and I'm especially excited for Thursday when I have the chance to play someone as good as Jenna," Miller said. "I really don't know Jenna but I've heard that she's a good golfer and I know I'll have to play well to compete with her.
"And I also heard that Jenna is super nice so it will be fun to play with her," Miller added.
Palmiscno, who was the division medalist after shooting a 74 in the qualifying round, advanced to today's quarterfinals by stopping Annie Kautto of Staples 6 and 5. Today's other lower-bracket match pits Emily Israelson of Staples against Alyssa Konecne of Bemidji. Israelson defeated Katelin Craft of Bemidji 8 and 7 while Konecne tripped Hannah Shafer of Brooklyn Park 3 and 2.
In today's upper-bracket battles, defending champion Missy Tabery of Wadena will face Katie Sheetz of Grand Rapids while Mikki Kromy of Grand Rapids will tangle with Mary Harris of Billings.
In Wednesday's play Tabery received a bye while Sheetz downed Laura Cahill of Grand Rapids 2-up. Kromy tackled Morgan Williams of Bemidji 3 and 2 while Harris eliminated Pam Johnson of Bemidji 7 and 6.
