Birchmont Junior Championship: Punch-out birdie lifts Ohman
Braeden Ohman of Grand Forks won the Junior Championship Division of the Birchmont and he credits one hole for the victory.
"I didn't start off very well and he capitalized on my mistakes," Ohman, who defeated Dakotah Brunelle of Cass Lake 4-3, said. "But my birdie on No. 10 turned the match around."
Ohman lost the first two holes, clawed his way back to even after No. 8 but fell behind again after a double-bogey on No. 9.
On the 10th hole he was left off the tee and had to punch over the trees back onto the fairway with his second shot. His approach, however, found the green and, after he drained the putt for a birdie, Ohman and Brunelle were even.
Ohman maintained that momentum during the back nine while Brunelle struggled. Ohman captured 11 and 13 with pars, claimed 14 with a bogey and ended the match with a birdie on No.15.
"I gained confidence after winning No. 10 and, after I was even, I knew it was a new round," Ohman said. "My goal coming into the tournament was to make the Championship field and once I did I just wanted to see how things played out.
"I enjoyed my time here and I know I'll be back," Ohman added.
