Bicyclist killed in Hubbard County
A male biker died Tuesday morning after a Detroit Lakes woman allegedly struck the bicycle from behind at 6:35 a.m. Tuesday on U.S. Highway 71 near Little Mantrap Road.
The bicyclist was Paul Howard, 52, of Rochester.
Laurine Beaulieu, 42, of Detroit Lakes, was driving a 1998 Plymouth van when she struck the back end of the bicycle, according to the Minnesota State Patrol's accident report.
The report said alcohol was detected in Beaulieu's system, but did not say whether it was above Minnesota's legal blood-alcohol content limit for driving, which is .08. She was not injured.
Beaulieu fled the scene of the accident on foot, according to a story in the Park Rapids Enterprise.
The State Patrol said Beaulieu's van sustained moderate damage; both the van and the bicycle were towed to the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension lab in Bemidji.
The bicyclist was not part of the MS TRAM ride, according to the State Patrol.
