The Jacks opened strong with Jake Crosby scoring a 6-4 decision at 103 on a final takedown and Colton Doty following with a first-period fall at 112.

But the Rapids took control at this point winning the next five bouts which included a fall, TF and two majors to move to the front 22-9.

Derek Lofgren snapped the string with a major 11-3 decision at 145.

But a pin and forfeit upped the Hawks' lead to 34-13 before Bemidji closed strong.

Corey Huber pinned Alan Grossman at 171, Evan Olson decked Jeff Meyers at 215 and eighth grader Alex Johnson scored his first varsity win with a final-period fall over Cody Carlisle.

Cody Peterson at 130 and Rob Mason at 189 made their first starts of the season, covering two of the three forfeits in the early going.

The Rapids held an 8-6 match split with Bemidji leading 4-3 in falls and 13-8 in takedowns.

Bemidji goes to Frazee Saturday for a quadrangular round robin with the Hornets, Parkers Prairie and Sauk Rapids.

One or two more newcomers may be eligible for their first matches in those bouts.

Bemidji won two of the only three JV matches, with Cody Thoring getting a fall and 2-1 decision.

Another two dozen Middle School bouts were on the preliminary card.
