BHS Thursday preview: Wrestling team home Thursday against Hibbing
Bemidji Minnesota P.O. Box 455 56619

The Bemidji High wrestling team returns to the home mats tonight to host Hibbing at 7 p.m. in the start of a busy weekend.

Saturday Bemidji hosts the annual Rick Lee Invitational with 12 teams vying for the title.

The girls basketball team is the only team on the road tonight, heading up the hill at Duluth to battle the East Greyhounds, putting its eight game win streak on the line.

The wrestlers are 1-4 in duals this year, beating Parkers Prairie at the Frazee Invitational where it lost to Sauk Rapids and Frazee.

Previously it fell to Roseau and Grand Rapids.

The Jacks are coming in fresh from a seventh place finish at the Cambridge meet where it had champions in Corey Huber and Evan Olson and a runner-up in Colton Doty.

Those three figure to be strong threats tonight.

But the Jacks lack of depth and inexperience will probably be too much to overcome.

The Bluejackets are 5-4 in duals, three wins coming at the Park Rapids Invitational where they beat Bertha-Hewitt, Park Rapids and Wadena. They took fifth at the Big Bear Invitational at Cass Lake in a 33-team field.

Hibbing won last year's match 34-24 with an 8-6 match split.

But five of the six Bemidji winners were seniors with only Huber back tonight among those that won.

He brings an 11-2 record into action. Olson is 8-3 and Doty 8-2.

The only two others with winning marks are Jake Crosby 8-7 and Drew Peterson 5-4.

Coach Rob Whelan will field a full lineup tonight.

He will open with 103-Jake Crosby; 112- Colton Doty; 119-Kyle Johnson; 124-Drew Peterson; 130-Kodi Craft; 135-Luke Bruns; 140-Jordan Lemke; 145- Derek Lofgren; 152-Tyler Johnson; 160-Travis Utley; 171-Corey Huber; 189-Rob Mason; 215-Evan Olson; Hwt.-Andrew Cable or Alex Johnson

Bemidji will drop weight for the Rick Lee but will enter only 11 wrestlers because of the switch.

The Jacks will be open at 119, 171 and 215 with Huber dropping to160 and Olson to189.

Girls favored

The girls cage team will be favored at Duluth East but could get more of a battle then it has in recent starts.

In winning its last eight no team has come closer than 11 and none , since the Moorhead win that opened the run closer than 19.

The last outing was a 69-32 romp past Cloquet Tuesday.

East is 6-6 also winning handily against Duluth Central and Cloquet and dropping a close game to Grand Rapids as did Bemidji.

The Hounds are traditionally tough on their home court.

No changes are planned by Coach Rick Kehoe with Paige Jensen and Megan Larson flanking Kayla Hirt up front and Meg Claypool and Abby Hendricks in the back court.

And set for frequent play are Ashley Hirt, Erika Weimann, Megan Huseby and Kelsey Heisler.

The B Team brings a 7-4 mark to its opener. The Freshmen are 8-0 with no team coming closer than 23 points.

Bemidji won here last year 57-51 with Hirt netting 17.
