The Lumberjacks edged Moorhead 4-3 and fell to Thief River Falls 5-2.

"The win against Moorhead was a nice one," head coach Mark Fodness said. "We beat them 4-3 earlier this year, so it was nice to do it again before sections."

The Lumberjacks and the Spuds played a few hard-fought matches in the meet. The No. 1 and No. 2 players for the Jacks -- Alec Hess and Matt Hokanson -- went to tiebreakers for the third set, which is standard in triangular meets.

However, both lost the tiebreaker. Gabe Steinwald topped Hess 6-0, 1-6 (10-8) at No. 1 and Kurt Meyer beat Hokanson 4-6, 6-0 (10-7).

Adam Holter and Kyle Fodness also went to tiebreakers in their No. 1 doubles match but prevailed 2-6, 6-3 (10-2).

"The scores were very close again this time," Fodness said. "We win a tiebreaker or two and we had a chance to sweep them. It was a very good meet."

In the second meet of the triangular, the Lumberjacks proved to be no match for Thief River Falls, ranked No. 5 in Class A. The Prowlers won 5-2.

BHS's lone wins in the match were Noah Holter at No. 4 singles, who cruised to a 6-0, 6-4 win, and Garrett Atteberry and Gabe Heifort, who won 6-2, 6-3.

"We competed," Fodness said. "I like how we're playing right now. Thief is a great team and we did well against them."

The Jacks have one final dual remaining in the regular season; they travel to Grand Rapids Thursday.

The section 8-2A tournament starts next week in Brainerd.
