The Bemidji High softball team gained the final at the Cloquet Invitational Saturday before bowing 6-2 to Chaska in the title game.
It was their second loss to Chaska this year, the other a 6-1 early season setback at Chaska. It left the team at 15-2.
Bemidji vaulted to the final with 11-0 and 12-2 wins over Pine City and Cloquet.
The opener lasted just five frames with Bemidji opening with five in the first and scoring in each of its four turns at bat.
Paige Jensen went the distance for her fifth win, fanning three and walking none.
Singles by Summer Monsrud and Meg Claypool and Kaia Sele's triple began the big first.
A hit batter, singles by Chelsea Yost and Megan Gullickson and an ground out completed the frame.
Amber Teal reached on an error and scored on a ground out in the second.
Three more scored in the third on singles by Brittany Thompson and Gullickson, an error and Claypool's double and two more in the fourth on Jensen's double, Thompson's single and a ground out.
Claypool had three hits and Thompson and Gullickson two in the 11 hit attack. Bemidji played errorless defense.
The Cloquet game went the full distance with Bemidji tying the game in the third and winning with seven in the fourth.
Yost went the route for her eighth win fanning seven and walking one.
Cloquet scored single runs in the first two frames.
But singles by Teal and Sele around Claypool's double tied the score in the third,.
Thompson and Yost opened the big fourth with doubles. After a Teal single and error, doubles by Claypool, Sele and Jensen completed the carnage.
Hits by Sele and Thompson produced a run in the sixth and hits by Claypool. and Sele and an error plated two in the seventh.
Claypool and Sele had three hits and Thompson, Yost and Teal two in a 14 hit assault.
Bemidji scored twice in the first of the title game on Claypool's double and singles by Eel Sele, Jensen and Thompson.
But despite loading the bases three times, it did not score again.
Chaska went ahead with three in the second and added one in the fourth and two in the sixth
Bemidji out hit the winners 9-7. Sele and Jensen had two.
Bemidji hosts Grand Rapids Thursday in its next start.
The B Team followed the same path beating Pine City and Cloquet before falling to Chaska 5-0.
Bemidji took the opener 12-0 on a two hitter by Jess Yost. April Ogden had three hits with a double, Taylor McLean two with a triple, Casey Miller two with a double while Yost homered and singled and Jamie Balmer doubled.
Bemidji then beat Cloquet 15-5 with 17 hits. Janie John son had five, Yost three with a homer and double and Mikayla Dahlin, Katie Hovila, Anna Pence and Miller two with Pence and McLean getting doubles. McLean got her fifth win on a four hitter.
But Bemidji's attack ended in the title game as it managed only four hits including two by Miller and a Dahlin double. Yost allowed only seven hits suffering her first loss.
