BHS skiing: Jacks retain Maplelag titles
The Bemidji High School Nordic ski teams both retained their titles at the Maplelag meet Tuesday, hosted by Detroit Lakes.
The boys shaded Brainerd by 10 points in a seven team field and the girls by six among five girls teams.
Only Bemidji, Brainerd and Detroit Lakes, however, fielded full squads.
Jake Richards of DL won the boys 10k pursuit race in 26.05.
Bemidji's Matt Lee was second in 26:11 with Dylan Ramstad-Skoyles of DL, Zean Baker of Brainerd and Kevin Drotts of Deer River the next three.
But Bemidji had Tony Sagedahl seventh, Adam Holter eighth and Kyle Sagedahl 11th to finish with 376 points to 366 for the Warriors. DL had 362.
Sam Dwyer was 14th, Eli Rassler 16th, Lucas Brokl 22nd, Matt Chatterton 24th and Carl Graefe 28th in a 29-skier field.
Summer Ellefson of the Ellefson Home School took the girls title in 29:09 with Mindy Drotts of Deer River two seconds behind in second.
Bailey Drewes of Bemidji was third in 31.57 with Amanda Finstad of Brainerd and Berit Ramstad-Skoyles of DL fourth and fifth.
Laura Yourd was sixth for Bemidji Molly Manske seventh and Tiffany Mason 11th to complete the scoring.
Bemidji ended with 377 points to 371 for Brainerd and 355 for DL with Deer River and the Ellefson Home School incomplete.
The event attracted 23 skiers.
Brainerd won the boys JV title with 384 points to 373 for Bemidji and 366 for DL. OTC entered three skiers.
Cole Sundquist of Brainerd was the individual winner in 14:14 in a 5k freestyle race.
John Buckanaga took sixth, Trent Buckanaga seventh, Andy Berube eighth and Tanner Asper 10th as the four Bemidji scorers.
Devin Danielson was 11th as the lone kicker in a 19-skier field
Bemidji's Kaitlin Bakker of TrekNorth won the girls JV title in 16:20 by 2:15 over Jordyn Hulsether of Brainerd.
Brainerd took the team title with 395 points to 360 for DL. Bemidji, Deer River, Long Prairie and Otter Tail Center were incomplete.
For Bemidji, Kim Truedson was fourth in 19:23, Kristina Lengerhuis 11th and Anna Mangiamele 19th.
Bemidji won the boys Junior High title with 390 points to 376 for Brainerd and 347 for DL with Deer River and OTC entering a solo skier.
Jordan Wednchuk of Bemidji won his third individual title in the past four meets in 10:23 with teammate Josh Claussen second in10:56.
Matt Eriksson was fifth and Austin Chatterton sixth to complete the scoring.
Joel Carlson was 12th, Isaiah Riegert 13th, Kyle Labernik 14th, Ethan Houle 15th, Kyle Johnson 17th and Tyler Verdugo 21st in a field of 23.
Brainerd took the girls Junior High crown with 387 points to 365 for Deer River and 358 for Bemidji with OTC having three skiers and DL 2.
Katie Montgomery of Brainerd won in 12:02 over teammate Victoria Johnson in 12:26.
For Bemidji, Morgan Sagedahl was fifth, California Thorson seventh, Cassie Wednchuk 16th and Lauren Weaver 18th to complete the scoring with Anna Eriksson 20th and Atomic Thorson 22nd in a field of 27.
All but California Thorson are sixth and seventh graders.
Next up for Mark Walters skiers is the giant Mesabi East Invitational at Giants Ridge Saturday, the largest cross country high school ski race in the nation. Upwards of 75-80 schools from throughout the state are expected to compete.
