BHS golf: Bemidji boys first at Wadena

The Bemidji High boys captured first place while the girls finished third at the Wadena co-ed Invitational Saturday. at Whitetail Run.

The title was the first for the boys this spring after finishing third in three of its past four starts.

Bemidji won with a 325 to 340 for Grand Rapids. Staples-Motley, Wadena and Crosby- Ironton rounded out the top five in a six-team field.

Bemidji swept the first four spots with Kevin Larson taking medalist honors on a match of cards with Joe Welle at 80, Rylee Curb shot 82 and Trey Dale 83. The kickers were Kaleb Hanson 89 and Max Hazelton 91.

"The weather conditions were horrible, said Coach Eric Niskanen. "I think on a good day we could have shot a 310."

For the girls, Grand Rapids won at 342 to 376 for Staples-Motley and 388 for Bemidji. UNC and Wadena completed the top five.

Medalist honors went to Mikki Kromy of Grand Rapids for the second straight day at 81. Teammate Meg Grozdanich and Cydney Hasselberg of Staples were one stroke behind.

For Bemidji, Shelby Sauer hit 92, Mega Phelps and Kelsey Bretschneider 97 and Erin Buckanaga 102. It was Buckanaga's first time cracking the top four this season.

The kickers were Emily Frosaker at 104 and Marissa Loch115.

The boys head to the Detroit Lakes Country Club Tuesday and play at Greystone Saturday to complete their regular season.

The girls close at DL Monday and Rogers Thursday.

The sectionals open Memorial Day. Both will be 36 hole. Two-day events.
