Grand Rapids is considered the top team in Section 7AA girls tennis and the Thunderhawks have already reached double figures in victories. Bemidji also has had a very successful fall as the Lumberjacks entered Wednesday's match at Grand Rapids with a 10-3 record.
Among the wins was a 4-3 decision over Grand Rapids early in the campaign, a victory that the Thunderhawks had every intention of reversing Wednesday.
But, once again, Grand Rapids came up short as BHS played its best match of the season and downed the Thunderhawks 5-2.
"This was our toughest remaining test prior to the section meet and we approached the match as if it were part of the section tournament," said Bemidji coach Mark Fodness. "Grand Rapids is a very good team and wanted to get back at us. But we responded to the challenge."
The Lumberjacks entered the battle with 10 straight victories in dual meets and most of them have featured one-sided individual wins. Wednesday, however, most of the individual battles could have gone either way but the Jacks found a way to win five of them.
In singles action Jessica Solberg edged Mic Cleveland 7-6 (7-2) in the first set but battered her foe 6-1 in the second.
Amy Frosaker breezed to her win at second singles as she posted a 6-2, 6-1 victory and Kenzie Schultz outgunned Chanelle Snyder 7-5, 6-4 at fourth.
Bemidji did lose at third singles as Claudia Bellew dropped a tough 7-5, 7-6
The Lumberjacks continued their fine play in doubles. The key match of the day came at first doubles where Emma Nielsen and Katie Ditmanson gutted out a 3- 6,6-3, 6-0 triumph. BHS also prevailed at second doubles where Claire Baumgartner and Olivia Dickinson posted a 6-3, 6-3 win.
Grand Rapids claimed the third doubles match as Bemidji's Francesca Huerd and Annika Johnson dropped a tight 4-6,6-4, 6-3 decision.
"We were behind early in many of the matches but after we took Grand Rapids'
best shot we came back to win most of the time," Fodness said. "This is the best we have played all year. This was a great victory."
