BHS girls soccer team upsets Sartell, advances to section title game
Josie Spry converted Erin Booth's feed 3:30 into overtime to lift the Bemidji girls soccer team to a 4-3 upset victory at Sartell Tuesday in the Section 8A semifinals.
The Lumberjacks now will play either East Grand Forks or St. Cloud Cathedral Thursday for the section championship. Those teams met late Tuesday night at East Grand Forks. The section title game is listed for a 7:30 p.m. start at St. Cloud State but, if East Grand Forks wins, the possibility of shifting locations exists.
Tuesday night BHS, which was seeded third in the North Sub-Section, trailed Sartell, the top seed from the South, 3-1 with 12 minutes to play in regulation. The Lumberjacks, however, rallied with goals by Booth and Stina Haave to tie the game and force overtime.
"We were in a slump during the first half and during some of the second half," said BHS coach Kelly Schoonover. "Sartell was beating us to all of the 50/50 balls but in the last 15 minutes we jumped back into the flow and attacked very hard."
Bemidji opened the scoring six minutes into the game when Booth scored courtesy of Caitlin Blotske's assist. Sartell, however, scored the next three to take charge and seeming put the game out of reach.
But Bemidji saved its best for last.
"When you have a 3-1 lead with less than 15 minutes remaining you feel that the win is at hand," Schoonover said. "For us to get two goals in 10 minutes was impressive and I'm sure Sartell was shocked.
"But the way we came back just showed our character. We worked hard and that work paid off," Schoonover said.
Casey Palmer finished with 18 saves in the Bemidji goal.
The Lumberjacks will take a 13-6 record into Thursday's game.
