Both Bemidji High School golf teams were in action in tournaments Saturday, and both notched top-five finishes.
Girls take second
The BHS girls took second place at the 19-team Virginia Invitational, shooting 367 at The Quarry, a par-73 course in Biwabik.
The Lumberjacks came in behind first-place Grand Rapids, which took first with 353.
Morgan Miller topped the BHS scorecard with a 43-44-87, taking sixth place overall individually. Grand Rapids' Katie Sheetz was the medalist with 78.
"We did fine, I think," Lumberjacks coach Jeff Nelson said. "We left a lot of shots out there and the girls were somewhat disappointed by that. We had a lot of putts; the greens on the course are huge."
The Jacks had two other top-ten individual finishers in Megan Dondelinger and Katelyn Craft. Dondelinger and Craft both shot 46-47-93 but Dondelinger edged Craft for ninth place in a playoff.
"I think we did OK," Nelson said. "We're young, and we're getting better each time."
The Lumberjacks return to the course May 11 at the Long Prairie Invitational.

Boys take third
SAUK CENTRE -- The Lumberjack boys finished in a dead heat for third with St. Cloud Tech at the Sauk Centre Invitational, tying for 324.
Brainerd took first with 307 and Alexandria second with 311.
"Overall they did alright," head boys coach Seth Knudson said. "We had our No. 1 and No. 2 guys out for prom, but a lot of the teams here were in the same boat."
Elliot Leinen paced the Lumberjacks with a score of 75. Nick Brunbell of Alexandria was the medalist, shooting 72.
Leinen was the only Lumberjack to shoot under 80; Ryan Erickson shot 80, Zack Rickers 85 and Bo Borowski 84.
"We did OK, but some of the guys wish they'd have shot better," Knudson said. "Still, we tied for third without our full crew. I'm happy with the effort."
The Lumberjacks host a home meet at the Bemidji Country Club Monday.
