Consistency is a quality every golfer wants to possess and it is obvious that Meg Phelps has that tool in her arsenal.
The Bemidji senior shot 44-45-89 Thursday in the first round of the Section 8-3A tournament at Long Prairie and was in fifth place heading into the final 18 holes.
Phelps was happy with that score and her position and was hoping to duplicate that performance on Friday.
"In the second round I wanted to play the same or maybe improve a little," Phelps said. "I thought another 89 would be enough to get me to state and if I could shoot a little better I might give myself a cushion."
Despite heat and humidity that made Friday's temperature feel like 100 degrees Phelps accomplished her goal, shooting another round of 44-45-89. That consistency was rewarded with fifth place overall and third place among the individual qualifiers. The top five earned berths in the state meet and, for the second straight year, Phelps will conclude her season at Bunker Hills.
St. Cloud Apollo took the 8-3A team title with a 722 total. Trailing Apollo were Alexandria at 740, St. Cloud Tech at 741 and Buffalo at 749.
"I'm excited and so happy to make it to state again," Phelps, who finished 50th last year at the state meet with rounds of 89-90-179, said. "I would have been very disappointed if I hadn't made it.
"I think I'll play better at the state meet this year because I should be more relaxed after being there last year."
"Meg played great golf over these two days," said BHS coach Jeff Nelson. "These were tough conditions and the scores were high but Meg hung in there."
