SARTELL - Bemidji's doubles team of seniors Kyle Fodness and Adam Holter advanced to the semifinals of the Section 8-2A tennis tournament here Tuesday as the seniors disposed of Ricky Satterness and Joel Garberick of Sartell 6-3, 6-3.

The victory assured Fodness and Holter of at least two matches today at St. Cloud Apollo. The first will be at 9 a.m. when the BHS duo will square off against Jake Toedter and Brett Hultgren of Becker. Holter and Fodness entered Tuesday's action seeded second among the four North Sub-Section teams while Toedter and Hultgren represented the top seed of the South.

If Holter and Fodness defeat the Becker doubles team they will advance to today's championship match. A loss would drop them into today's third-place match. The winner of the third-place battle could remain alive for a top-two finish and a trip to the state tournament, however, because a true second match will be played if it is warranted based on the bracket results.

"The conditions were tough for everybody with 25 mile per hour winds that made the ball move all over the place," said BHS coach Mark Fodness. "Considering the conditions, both teams played well."

Each set was deadlocked 3-3 but both times Fodness and Holter took control.

"We found a way to become more aggressive once we had a lead," the coach said. "I was happy to see the guys step it up when it counted."

Jacks lose 6-1

Earlier Tuesday the Lumberjacks saw their team season come to a close when they lost 6-1 to Becker in the semifinals of the team tournament.

Bemidji's lone victory came at fourth singles where Noah Holter dumped Austin Hill 6-4, 6-3.

BHS dropped the other six matches in straight sets.

"We were a little disappointed with the outcome," Fodness said. "We were hoping to push Becker more than we did but that was as good a team as we have faced this year.

"Lately we've been able to win those critical points but today Becker won the points that mattered up and down the lineup," Fodness added.
