Riley Brooks converted a rebound of Kyle Fodness' crossing shot from just outside the post to provide the winning goal in Thursday's 2-1 Bemidji boys soccer victory at East Grand Forks.

The win was Bemidji's third in five outings and for the fourth time this fall the final score of Bemidji's game was 2-1. The lone exception was a 3-0 triumph at Detroit Lakes.

"These guys continue to put the coaching staff in cardiac arrest mode," said Jacks head coach Rick Toward. "Our games have been very intense until the very last whistle."

The Lumberjacks wanted to take charge early and they accomplished that task by scoring four minutes into the contest.

Patrick Trummer worked his way into the box and had a clear line to the goal when he was fouled. A penalty kick was awarded and Fodness beat EGF goalie Josh Reggorah to give the Jacks a 1-0 lead.

"Before the game we talked about establishing control by scoring in the first five minutes," Toward said. "And we did that with Kyle's goal on the penalty kick four minutes in."

The Lumberjacks maintained the 1-0 lead the remainder of the half and Brooks' goal four minutes into the second stanza provided a 2-0 cushion.

"I was feeling good after Riley's goal early in the second half but then we gave it right back a minute later," Toward said.

Ryan Hammargren beat Bemidji's defense with a direct kick and the outcome was up for grabs again.

The Jacks' defense stiffened the rest of the way as it limited East Grand Forks to only one more shot in the final 35 minutes. Goaltender Carl Graefe was able to stop it for one of his three saves on the day.

"East Grand Forks was a good team," Toward said. "It had outscored its opponents 14-1 prior to Thursday and had a 3-0 record.

"We're 3-2 now against some very good competition and four of the games have been on the road," the coach continued. "Any time you can get points on the road you've had a good game."

Bemidji will try to secure more road points Saturday when it travels to St. Cloud Cathedral for a 5 p.m. contest.
