BEMIDJI — The Bemidji Blue Angels danceline is heading to Elk River Saturday for the Section 4-3A meet.

Based on student population, Bemidji will be the smallest school in the competition as BHS was four students above the Class 2A cutoff, according to Minnesota State High School League officials.

“This is our third year in Class 3A and we, very much, are the smallest school in the section,” said Blue Angels coach Amy Delap who is completing her first year as the head coach. “This is a pretty stiff group that we’ll be up against and we probably won’t win the section. Our goal is to improve our personal bests. We have improved all season and we want to continue that on Saturday.”

In addition to Bemidji, Section 4-3A includes Duluth East, Moorhead, Anoka, Rogers, Blaine, Brainerd, St. Cloud Tech, Buffalo, Coon Rapids, Elk River, Andover, Champlin Park and St. Francis.

The top three teams in the high kick and in jazz will represent the section at state.

Last winter Brainerd finished second in the state in the high kick and St. Cloud Tech was fifth. Blaine placed sixth in the state in jazz.

“At the section meet we’ll compete in both the high kick and the jazz,” Delap said. “We’ve been doing well this season, especially in the high kick. At the Frazee meet we placed first in high kick and at our Bemidji meet we were second. So far this season our top finish in jazz was a fourth place.”

Delap is happy with the development of the Blue Angels in both dances and she is pleased with the progress.

“We definitely have gotten better in both kick and jazz,” the coach said. “Kick has always been more of a strength for us. Jazz is newer than kick and it’s been slower going for us. But our scores in both kick and jazz have continued to improve all year and that is what we like to see.

“The kids are all very happy with where we are and are looking forward to the section meet,” Delap added.

On Feb. 8 the Blue Angels will host the team’s annual fundraising dance show at the BHS gym.

Joining the Blue Angels varsity and JV will be the BSU dance team, the Bemidji Middle School dance team plus dancers from Just for Kix and First City Dance Studio. The show will begin at 11 a.m.

“This is my first year as the varsity head coach and it has been a very good year, no matter what happens Saturday at the section meet,” Delap said.
