The Bemidji Lumberjacks baseball team wasted one of its best offensive showings with a lax defensive performance Friday to fall to Fergus Falls 10-8 in a wild contest at the BSU Stadium.

Each team had five errors in the contest. Each coughed up five unearned runs.

In the end, a three-run sixth by the Otters upped its lead to 10-6, just enough to hold off Bemidji's threats in the final two frames.

Fergus had only nine hits but got several in key situations to combine its 10 runs into three innings.

Bemidji had eight safeties and scored in five different innings coming through with several key hits with runners in scoring position.

But the Jacks pitchers were unable to overcome the errors, failing to get outs in several situations with runners in scoring position.

Tyler Follis lasted into the sixth before yielding the mound to Jeremiah Graves. The pair fanned eight and walked three but hit four batters.

Two Otter hurlers fanned two, walked three and hit two. It was that kind of a game.

Fergus opened early when an error, hit batter and Spencer Kidder's single sent home a run and a second scored on a second boot.

Bemidji grabbed back the lead in its at bat when two hit betters and an error loaded the sacks with no outs.

A walk forced home one run and Billy Statton singled in two more for a 3- 2 lead.

Starter Follis retired the side in order in the second.

But in the third a one out error opened the gates.

Derek Hansen singled and Matt Mithaugen tripled in two runs. Kyle Shaikowski singled him home and after a hit batter and walk filled the bases, two more crossed on another wild throw.

Bemidji countered with one in its at bat to draw back to 7-4. Simon Anderson reached on an error, took third on Derek Lofgren's single and scored on a ground out.

Bemidji drew within one in the fifth, scoring twice when Sol Schneider and Anderson singled. They advanced on a ground out and both scored as Cody Rutledge beat out a single to deep short and the throw to first went wild.

But Follis walked the ninth batter, Alex Hensch, for the second time to open the sixth and made way for Graves.

He got two outs around a walk but Hansen doubled to the left center field fence to plate both runners and scored when Matt Mithaugen singled to drive him home.

Bemidji answered with one when two walks and a hit batter loaded the bases with one out.

Hansen came on to relieve Shaikowski and one run crossed on a ground out.

Another came home in the seventh when a walk was followed by hits from Josh Kane and Graves.

But with the winning run at the plate, Hansen got the final two batters to end the game.

Rutledge was the only Bemidji player with two hits. Hansen, Mithaugen and Shaikowski all had two for the Otters.

The win lifted Fergus to 4-6. Bemidji lost its fourth straight to fall to 6-6.

The Jacks face two more losing teams next week, traveling to Hibbing Tuesday and hosting Grand Forks Central Friday before closing the week Saturday at Alexandria.
