The Bemidji Lumberjacks baseball team made a long trip for a short game Saturday, sent home after five frames in a 10-0 loss at Alexandria.
The game matched teams with identical 7-6 records. But the Cardinals used a two hit effort by righthander Derek Martin and a nine hit attack.
The game, however, was closer than the final score with Alex taking a slim 2-0 lead into its fifth at bat.
Bemidji was never able to end the fifth as six hits, combined with two walks and a hit batter, resulted in eight runs. The two outs in the frame came on force plays at the plate.
The game may have proved even more costly.
Simon Anderson, the Jacks top hurler, took a 3-0 record into play.
But he left after one frame with arm tightness after giving up one run .
Tyler Follis worked into the fifth with Trevor Andrews facing the final three batters. They fanned three, walked two and hit two.
Miller had six strikeouts and no walks.
He yielded a bloop single to Derek Lofgren to open the game and an infield hot to Billy Statton to open the fifth. Bemidji stranded two runners that frame, the only inning in which they were able to get more than one runner aboard.
Anderson fanned the first two batters he faced, the first on an 11 pitch battle with Zac Beireis.
But Dalton Lueschke beat out an infield single, advanced on a passed ball and scored on a single by Collin Erickson.
Follis relieved to start the second and gave up a run in the third when Leuschke reached on an error, stole second, reached third on a ground out and scored on Karl Brezina's infield hit.
Follis set down the side in order in the fourth.
But Tyler Iverson doubled into the left field corner to open the fifth and a hit batter and fielder's choice loaded the bases.
After a force at home, singles by Brezina and Shawn Krueger each cashed two runs and another hit and walk filled the sacks again.
Exit Follis, enter Andrews. He got his first batter to ground into another force at home but Iverson, up for the second time, doubled in two runs and Leuschke singled in the final pair to end the day.
Iverson, Leuschke and Brezina all had two hits for Alex.
Bemidji will head north Monday to face Warroad in a 4 p.m. double header, the second game added the past two days to enable both teams to make up previous rainouts against other foes. Bemidji will be forced to dig deep for pitchers if Anderson is not ready to go.
B Team falls
The B Team also dropped back to the .50o mark, bowing 8-4 to reach 6-6.
Alex broke a 3-3 tie with two in the fifth and added three more in the sixth to pull away.
Bemidji had only five hits wit Booster Russ getting a double and Jake Urban driving home two runs with a second inning single.
The B Team also plays at Warroad Monday.
