Betty Irene Spindler

Betty Irene Spindler, 77, of Park Rapids, died Thursday, April 30, 2009 at Diamond Willow Assisted Living in Park Rapids following a battle against cancer.

She was born to Irene and Berthold Hartung May 10, 1931 in Wadena County. She attended country school through the eighth grade and then attended Verndale Public High School, graduating in 1949. As a young woman, she worked in the Wadena area for a number of years. In the mid-1950s she ventured to Park Rapids where she worked as a waitress for Lundberg's Supper Club.

On March 21, 1958 she married Forrest O. Spindler in Park Rapids. She cleaned the Otto Hendrickson American Legion Post 212 in Park Rapids first as temporary work. The assignment turned into a 23-year career.

She is survived by her husband; a daughter, Kathy (Jeff) Anderson, of Park Rapids; a brother-in-law, Ronald Piepkorn, of Wadena; and many nieces and nephews, cousins, and aunts.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Douglas Hartung, in 2002; and a sister, Patricia, in 2002.

Honorary casket bearers: "The Girls" at Innovis Clinic: Marti Fischer, Kathy Oines, Bev Phelps and special friend Cindy Bradow.

Casket bearers: Ronald, Scott and Terry Piepkorn, Steve and Ron Young, and Tom Fitzsimmons.

Funeral service: 2 p.m. Thursday, May 7 at Faith Baptist Church in Park Rapids with Rev. Russ Paulson officiating. Mary Hanninen will sing, "In The Garden" and "Go Rest High On The Mountain." The congregational hymn will be "How Great Thou Art."

Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. today (Wednesday), May 6 at Jones-Pearson Funeral Home in Park Rapids and one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.

Interment: Greenwood Cemetery, Park Rapids.
