Bernard "Bernie" H. Nugent, 84, of Detroit Lakes, died Monday, December 15, 2008, in Innovis Hospital, Fargo, N.D., as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Bernard Herman Nugent, known as "Bernie," was born to Irvin and Gertrude (Meyer) Nugent on Sept. 1, 1924, in Moorhead. After serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II, he returned to Moorhead, where he worked in construction and was a fireman. He married Mary Mae Bellefeuille of Callaway on June 1, 1948.
From Moorhead the family moved to Hillsboro, N.D., and later to Grafton, N.D., where Bernie was the proprietor of the local bowling lanes. He was later employed by NorWest Bank of Grafton. After retirement, Bernie and Mary moved to Detroit Lakes. In June 2008, family and friends gathered to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary. Over that weekend celebration he shot his fourth hole-in-one.
Bernie was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church of Detroit Lakes, Knights of Columbus, American Legion, and the Detroit Lakes Golf Club. An avid golfer and bowler, Bernie was inducted into the North Dakota Bowling Hall of Fame and was one of the founders of the Hillsboro Golf Course. A devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather, Bernie had a smile and good word for everyone. He made everyone feel good and will be missed by his large family and many, many friends. He was a good, kind, and caring man.
Bernie is survived by his wife, Mary Mae (Bellefeuille) Nugent of Detroit Lakes; children, LeAnne (Tom) Riedman of Lake Park, Laurie (Richard) Percy of Sacramento, Calif., Susan (Lou Cerrone) Nugent of Sandwich, Mass., Karen Bye of Las Vegas and Diane (Tim) Ihry of Papillion, Neb.; four grandchildren and four great grandchildren; a sister, Toni Richtman; brothers and sisters-in-law, Della Bellefeuille, Duane (Marion) Bellefeuille, Dick (Marilyn) Bellefeuille, Keith (Natalie) Bellefeuille, Ken (Lois) Bellefeuille, Jeanette Bellefeuille Jahnke, Danielle (Jim) Dixon and David (Betty) Bellefeuille; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding Bernie in death were his parents; brother and sisters, Jim (Louise) Nugent, Donna (Obert) Randal and Olive (Noel) Hastad; and brothers-in-law, Warren and Dennis Bellefeuille and Bill Richtman.
A memorial mass for Bernie will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 2, in Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Detroit Lakes. There will be visitation will for one hour prior to mass at the church.
