Bernadette was born on March 29, 1932 in St. Cloud MN, the daughter of Thomas Bernard and Mary (Zabinski) Deppa. Her mother died when Bernadette was just 9 months old, leaving her father, a St. Cloud police officer, to care for his two daughters and a son. Bernadettes older sister, Eileen, assumed a large part of the mothers nurturing role until, and even after her father remarried to Edna Goff. She attended both a large parochial school in St. Cloud, and a one room country school when they moved to a farm near St. Cloud. A precocious child, Bernadette managed to skip one grade, entering St. Cloud Tech high school a year early, and graduating with honors, including National Honor Society awards.

Bernadette married Richard Olson, of Grand Forks, ND, in San Francisco, in 1952 where Richard was attending Submarine Electronics school. They made their home in Honolulu for two years, and then moved to Minneapolis when Richard had completed his service. During their 21 year stay in Minneapolis, Bernadette was blessed with the birth of both a daughter (Kathy) and a son (Richard Jr.) Throughout her married life, Bernadette worked as either a medical or a legal secretary, except during the formative years of each childs life, when she devoted her entire self to their nurturing and support.

Bernadette and Richard moved to Pittsburgh, PA where he served as a researcher at the medical school, and Bernadette continued her legal secretary career. After 16 years in Pittsburgh, she and Richard moved to Grand Forks, where they spent 8 years prior to retiring in Bemidji. In summary, Richard was blessed with more than 62 years of a marriage to a wonderful lady whose love and devotion sustained him and their family. Thanks be to God!
