DETROIT LAKES - Brady Schmidt edged Matt Huberty of Sauk Rapids by .03 to capture second place in Saturday's 100 at the Section 8-2A meet and earn a berth in the state meet which will be held Friday and Saturday at Hamline University in St. Paul.
Joining Schmidt at the state meet will be the 4x800 relay team of Scott Huslebus, Sam Carlson, Gunnar Nelson and Elias Hendrickson. The foursome combined for a time of 8:01.35 and a second-place finish at the section meet.
"As the lead Scott ran a phenomenal race and Sam and Gunnar kept us in position for Elias to run a great anchor leg," said BHS coach Steve Sneide. "The guys were pumped to run a great race and they did what they expected."
Monticello hit the tape in 7:59.24 to win the event but Sneide was pleased with the way his relay team challenged the leader.
"We gave Monticello a run for the money," the coach said.
The event was a two-team race from the outset as Moorhead finished a distant third at 8:05.02.
Schmidt also placed second in the 100 but there was no margin for error in his race. Brady Anderson of Moorhead won the event in 11:33 while Schmidt was timed in 11.50 and Huberty in 11.53.
"Brady had an 'iffy' start but he battled back and managed to nip Huberty at the end for second," Sneide said. "Brady definitely made things interesting but it was great that he was able to recover.
"And we know he can run faster next week at state."
In the 110 hurdles Tanner Phillips was eighth (17.23). Seth Neubeck was the Jacks' top finisher in the 1,600 as he placed 21st (4:47.62).
The 4x100 relay team of Schmidt, Isaiah Moore, Seth Wall and Dylan Dickinson was sixth (45.26) and Hendrickson captured fourth in the 800 (1:58.23).
The 4x400 relay team of Nick Gubbels, Hulsebus, Nelson and Hendrickson was third (3:28.93). Sartell took second in the event with a time of 3:28.55.
Zach Declusin cleared 5-11 to place fifth in the high jump, Adam Loisel was 18th in the triple jump (38-4.75) and Roy Gaeton was 23rd in the discus (118-4).
