Bemidji's Hokanson, Holter advance in section tennis
ST. CLOUD — Bemidji’s doubles team of Matt Hokanson and Noah Holter advanced to today’s semifinals of the Section 8-2A tennis tournament with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Thor Holstad and Denver Robak of St. Michael-Albertville Tuesday at St. Cloud Apollo High School.
Hokanson and Holter will continue their bid for a berth in the state meet at 9 a.m. today when they face Erik Tungland and Brett Hultgren of Becker. Holter and Hokanson entered the section meet as the second seed from the North Sub-Section while Tungland and Hultgren comprise the top seed from the South.
If the Bemidji duo can pull off the upset it will advance to the section championship match at 11 a.m. today. A loss in the semifinals would drop Hokanson and Holter into the third-place match but third place could also be rewarded with a match for true second.
The top two doubles teams will earn trips to the state tournament.
“Noah and Matt played very consistently,” said BHS coach Mark Fodness. “The St. Michael team had some great shots but Noah and Matt just stayed with the game plan and continued to apply the pressure.
“Eventually that pressure paid off.”
The first set was a see-saw battle but Bemidji held a 5-4 lead. In the final game of the set Hokanson and Holter broke St. Michael’s service and won the set 6-4.
Holter began the second set holding his service and St. Michael never really threatened again.
“We stayed aggressive throughout the match and didn’t have any peaks or valleys,” Fodness said. “We had a game plan going in and Matt and Noah did a great job of executing it.”
