Bemidji's Hedstrom reaches state diving finals
Bemidji diver Jana Hedstrom will be competing in Saturday's state high school meet finals as the senior finished in sixth place after Thursday's eight preliminary dives.
Teammate Kylei Grosfield just missed Saturday's finals as she finished 17th with a score of 217.0. The 16th-place diver scored 217.2 and only the top 16 advanced to Saturday's finals.
Hedstrom finished with 234 points and BHS diving coach Ryan Ohnstad believes that she could move up as high as third Saturday.
"The scoring was very close," Ohnstad said. "Only 17 points separated Jana from Kylei.
"I think the top two girls will finish 1-2 on Saturday but Jana could move up as high as third. She won't finish any lower than 16th but places could drastically change on Saturday because the scoring is that close."
Grosfield made the first cut after five dives but just missed the cut to 16 after the next three.
"Kylei came very close to making it to Saturday but the experience she gained this year at state will certainly help her in the future," Ohnstad said.
Hedstrom will take today off and will return to the University of Minnesota pool noon Saturday. Friday's action features the swimmers and Bemidji will be represented by Steph Frey, Lexie Hendricks, Erin Arndt, Danielle Hoven and Kenzie Timms.
