Bemidji's Fenson rink clinches spot in USA Curling National Championship game
The Pete Fenson rink of Bemidji defeated Tyler George of Duluth 11-7 Friday to advance to the finals of the USA Curling National Championships at Scheels Arena in Fargo, N.D.
Fenson and teammates Shawn Rojeski of Chisholm, Joe Polo of Duluth and Ryan Brunt of Bemidji remain unbeaten in the event. They completed round-robin play with a 9-0 record.
The championship game will be played at 3 p.m. Saturday.
George will face Todd Birr of Mankato at 8 p.m. Friday in the semifinal, with the winner advancing to Saturday's final. Birr eliminated Heath McCormick of New York 9-5 in Friday's other playoff.
Fenson scored four in the fifth end against George and added one in the sixth to take a 7-4 lead. The teams exchanged single points in the seventh and eighth before George took two in the ninth to pull within 8-7. But Fenson held the hammer in the 10th and scored three to put it away.
Two teams with Bemidji ties will play in the women's semifinal at 4 p.m. Friday. The Cassie Potter rink includes sisters Cassie Potter and Jamie Haskell, who grew up in Bemidji, and the Allison Pottinger rink includes Natalie Nicholson of Bemidji.
