Carlson was one of six Lumberjacks to post personal bests in the boys meet and his time of 16:21 over the 5,000-meter course was good for fifth place.

Jenna Truedson also ran her career best and finished second with a time of 14:24 over the 4,000-meter course.

As a team the BHS girls were sixth with 164 points while the boys finished fourth with 114.

Moorhead won the boys meet with 52 points and Willmar was second with 87. Those two teams will represent Section 8AA at the state meet.

The section's girls representtatives will be Monticello (49 points) and Alexandria (85 points).

Monticello entered the meet as the top-ranked team in the state girls poll.

"Both our girls and boys teams ran well. They stepped up to the competition," said Jacks coach Ryan Aylesworth.

"In the girls race we had three girls run their career best races, including Dani Gronhovd who ran 15:43 and beat her old career record by 30 seconds.

"In the boys race six of the seven runners set personal best times and the other missed his personal best by only two seconds. It was a great day for both of our teams."

Glen Ellingson of Moorhead dominated the boys race and enjoyed a 16-second cushion over his nearest rival. The top four boys finishers were seniors but Carlson snapped that streak when he placed fifth.

"Sam was in the top three for quite a while but those seniors eventually pulled ahead of him," Aylesworth said. "He ran a great race."

Bemidji's other results saw Seth Neubeck place 21st, Ryan Erickson 27th, Adam Lewis 28th, Adam Holter 33rd, Thomas Revering 46th and Billy Freyholtz 53rd.

Jamie Pippenburg of Alexandria captured the girls individual title with a time of 14:04 but Jenna Truedson edged Megan Hasz and Bethany Hasz of Alexandria for second.

The trio were neck-and-neck heading into the final stretch but Jenna Truedson won the battle to finish second.

Kim Truedson placed 18th for the Lumberjacks with a time of 15:25. The senior was among the pack battling for a top-10 finish but about two miles into the race she dropped back.

"Kim ran a solid race and I'm proud of her," Aylesworth said.

Gronhovd placed 24th with her personal best time while Mikayla Connell was 53rd, Kayla Olson 67th, Nicole Erdman 70th and Emma Brokl 71st.
