Pee Wee A
The Coca Cola Pee Wee A saw its state tournament hopes end one game short of advancing when it divided its four games at last weekend's regional at Moorhead.
The District 16 champions won their first two starts 7-1 over Virginia and 6-3 over Grand Rapids and needed one more victory to reach the state.
But they were shaded 4-3 by Moorhead in the winner's bracket final and lost to Grand Rapids 3-2 in overtime in the battle for the second state berth.
It ended another fine winter for Neil Huewe's Pee Wees at 29-7-4 and 11-1 in district play.
Bemidji had few problems with Virginia. Jack Johnson scored twice and Alex Pollock, Shaye Yaklich, Rocky Copiskey, Cody Gumeringer and Josh Lusby once.
Lusby had two assists and Pollock, Johnson, Gumeringer, Brady Tatro and Tanner Hammitt one.
Kyle Krause made 15 saves. Virginia had 22.
Bemidji broke a 3-3 tie after two periods to score three times in the third and dispel Grand Rapids.
Lusby had four goals and Pollock two. Copiskey had five assists, Lusby two and Pollock and Nick Leitner one.
Grant Tharaldson needed only five stops.
Pollock scored twice and Copiskey once in the setback to Moorhead, a team Bemidji had beaten and tied during the regular season.
Leitner and Lusby had the only assists. Tharaldson had 28 saves.
In the final game, Grand Rapids scored in overtime to end the Bemidji year.
Pollock had both Bemidji tallies. Leitner had two feeds and Lusby one.
Tharaldson made 39 saves.
