Bemidji youth baseball report for July 13
Bismarck rallied in the late going to shade the Grand Forks Warriors 7-6 Sunday and capture the title of the Coca Cola Classic at the Mark Evenson complex.
The event attracted 12 teams, three from Bemidji.
It operated in two six-team pools, each playing a round-robin Saturday and Sunday morning with the top six from each bracket matched in the finals.
Bemidji took third with a 6-1 decision over Moorhead. The Bemidji 11 All-Stars were ninth and a Mixed unit of 11 and 12-year-olds 11th.
That team replaced Walker which withdrew at short notice.
Bismarck led the final 2-0 and 4-1 before the Warriors scored four in the fourth to go ahead. They widened the lead to 6-4 in the fifth.
But Bismarck opened the sixth with a solo homer, its fourth of the game, and went on to score three times.
Each finalist went 5-0 in its pool, Grand Forks handing Bemidji its only setback 15-3.
The Northern Heat beat Moorhead 6-1 in the third-place game, scoring five times in the third to take charge. Eric Fitzgerald's grand slam featured that inning. Josh Cervenka also homered.
Tarron Baker and Tony Geerdes combined on a four-hitter. Bemidji had beaten Baxter 11-1, Aitkin 7-5. Stephen/Argyle 15-0 and Dickinson 2-0 in pool play.
The 11's beat Baxter's 11-year-old team 10-7 in the ninth-place game.
They finished 1-4 in pool play beating the Mixed 5-4 for their lone win.
The Mixed team shaded Aitkin 4-3 in the 11th place game, scoring single runs in the fifth and sixth to tie and win. Tyler McNamara doubled to lead the way. Alex English and McNamara shared mound chores.
The Mixed finished 0-5 in pool play.
