Bemidji wrestler Johnson wins title at Paul Bunyan Classic
Alex Johnson was the top seed at heavyweight during this weekend's Paul Bunyan Invitational in Brainerd and the Lumberjack wrestler lived up to that billing as he won all four of his matches to claim the title.
Bemidji had two other wrestlers place in the meet as Craig Maas was third at 145 and Logan Crosby fourth at 126.
"Alex wrestled under control the entire tournament and did a very nice job," said BHS coach Rance Bahr.
"Overall we are young and inexperienced. Some of our guys were wrestling for the first time on varsity. I think this year could be like last year where we start slowly but improve each meet," the coach added.
Johnson opened his title run with a pair of pins on Friday and the junior completed his journey with a pin in the semifinals and a 7-4 decision in the title match.
Maas was 2-0 on Friday and, after losing his first match on Saturday, bounced back to claim a pin and a 4-2 decision.
Crosby also wrestled three times on Saturday, losing his first on a pin, winning his second 6-3 and dropping the third-place match 2-1.
Bemidji will open its home season Tuesday against Thief River Falls.
