GRAND FORKS - Bemidji's 12-U Northern Heat baseball team won its opening game Thursday at the Cal Ripken Midwest Regional here.
Bemidji, which captured the state title last week, thumped Washington, Iowa 6-1 in Thursday's first round. That victory moved Bemidji into today's noon winner's bracket contest against either Bismarck or Colorado.
George Loxtercamp allowed only three hits and one unearned run in his six innings of work on the Bemidji mound. He also fanned nine and walked only one.
Bemidji took a 1-0 lead in the second when Adam Laakso walked and scored on a fielder's choice hit by Sam Goins.
Bemidji took charge with four runs in the third. Drew Boen reached on an error, Matt Fitzgerald bunted for a single and Zach Schaubut followed with a no-doubt home run to center. Later in the frame Laakso scored courtesy of Jonah Muller's single.
Bemidji cemented the win with Brady Weidemann's solo blast over the center-field screen in the fifth inning.
