The VFW took the first game of the doubleheader 12-0 and won the nightcap 10-8.

The team returns to Thief River Falls Friday for the district tournament. They are scheduled to play at 11 a.m. but the opponent is to be determined.

In the first game, the VFW capitalized on timely hitting and poor Thief River hitting to win 12-0.

Brady Eckman went the distance in the run-shortened, five-inning contest, giving up eight hits and striking out six.

Austin Weidemann was the leading hitter for Bemidji, hitting a double and a single. Every other hitter in the starting lineup either singled or walked.

The VFW had only eight hits but Thief River Falls committed six errors and Bemidji capitalized on it, scoring six runs in the first inning, two in the second and four in the fourth to run away with the win.

In game two, Thief River kept it much tighter and the teams one-upped each other in every inning.

TRF took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning, but Bemidji tied it with three of its own in the top of the second.

TRF once again re-took the lead in the bottom of the second with two more runs, but once again Bemidji answered in the top of the third. TRF scored a run in the bottom of the third to lead 6-5.

Neither team would score until the sixth, when Bemidji plated three to go on top for good, 8-6. TRF scored one in their half of the sixth to edge close, but Bemidji got some insurance in the seventh and eventually held on for the win.

In all, Bemidji collected eight hits to Thief River Falls' seven.

Dan Johnson picked up the win in relief for Bemidji. He came into the game in the second inning and threw for 3 2/3 innings.

Seth Anderson started and Colin Rutledge threw the final two innings.

Rutledge had two hits, both singles, for Bemidji and scored three times, while Tyler Geerds had two hits, also singles and scored twice.
