Bemidji VFW earns top seed in district tournament

The Bemidji VFW capped an unbeaten campaign against district opponents Saturday by hammering Moorhead 15-2 and 10-1 in Moorhead.

Saturday's sweep gave the Vets a 20-0 record against district foes and the top seed in the double-elimination district tournament which begins Thursday in East Grand Forks.

Bemidji will receive a first-round bye and not play until 10 a.m. Friday. The Vets will draw the winner of Thursday's game between the fourth and fifth seeds. Thursday's other opener matches the No. 3 seed against the No. 6 seed.

In addition to Bemidji and Moorhead the district includes Perham, Fergus Falls, Detroit Lakes and East Grand Forks.

Moorhead proved no challenge for the Vets and Bemidji took complete control with a huge inning in each game.

In the opener the VFW led 3-0 after three innings but erupted for 12 runs in the fourth. Moorhead issued five walks in the stanza which also featured Connor McNallan's RBI triple and Dom Hayle's 2-run double.

McNallan finished with a triple and a single while Collin Leif contributed a double and a single.

Trent Baker was the winning pitcher as he tossed a 5-hit shutout.

Cody Jenkins and Ryan Hirt combined on a 2-hitter in the nightcap. The Vets owned a 3-1 lead after four but settled the issue with six in the fifth. Once again, Moorhead's pitchers couldn't find the strike zone as Bemidji was the recipient of four walks in the decisive frame. Nick Hovila had a 2-run single in the stanza and Sam Dwyer added an RBI with his single.

Hovila finished with three singles and two RBI. Leif had two singles and Mitch Buckanaga and Cody Labernick added doubles.
