Bemidji track team uses invitational to prepare for sections
BEMIDJI -- Scoring team points wasn't a goal for either Bemidji High School track team during Tuesday's Bemidji Invitational. The fact that the girls team grabbed third place and the boys team took fourth in the six-team invitational didn't bother BHS coaches. This one was all about preparing for the Section 8AA meet, which is set for next week.
"This was a good meet for us," girls head coach Chris Lehman said. "We got to try some kids in some different events. Some of the kids were fighting for spots on the section team. It's all about that at this point."
Bemidji was third out of six teams in the girls meet with 125 points. Moorhead took first with 148.5 points and Grand Rapids second at 130.5. Trek-North scored three points to finish sixth.
The Lumberjacks were fourth out of five on the boys side, scoring 87 points. Moorhead won the meet with 193. Trek-North did not compete in the boys meet.
"This was more of a tune-up for us to see where we're at," boys coach Steve Sneide said. "I think we're in the mix in some events."
Both coaches stressed that they're not overly concerned with scoring points in the section meet. They'd just like to get individuals to state.
And both teams had some good finishes to that end.
The Lumberjack girls had five first-place finishers and five second-place finishers.
Maea Wall won both of her events. She ran the 200 in 26.71 seconds and leaped 16-7.5 to claim the long jump title.
Amber Peterson vaulted 9-8 to win the long jump, Alli Heifort threw 117-0 to win the discus throw and Jenna Truedson won the 800 in 2:15.
Truedson also took second place in the 1,600 with a time of 5:33.41, while Heifort claimed second in the shot put with 39-3.
Bemidji teams took second in three of the four relay events -- the 100, 400 and 800.
"We didn't run everybody in every race," Lehman said. "We used it as a chance to keep them fresh this time."
Trek-North earned its three points with a 10th-place finish in the 4x100 relay.
The Lumberjack boys team only had one first-place finish: the 4x400 relay, which posted a time of 3:30.45.
But other times were encouraging.
The Lumberjacks did not run a team in the 4x800 but Sneide said he was happy with individual times in the open 800. Elias Hendrickson and Scott Hulsebus finished second and third with times of 1:59.88 and 2:00.68.
"Their open times would have given the relay a really good time," Sneide said. "We feel pretty good about it."
The Jacks also fared well in the field events. Brady Schmidt took second in long jump at 19-1 and Zach Sauer was third at 19-0. Zac Declusin claimed second in the high jump at 5-10 and Adam Loisel placed second in the triple jump with a leap of 38-2.
And in the shot put, BHS didn't have anyone finish better than sixth but Sneide said he liked their throws.
"We had four guys over 40 in shot," he said. "That's a big improvement."
The Section 8AA meet preliminaries are set for May 30 in Sauk Rapids, while the finals will take place June 2 in Detroit Lakes.
"Overall I was happy with where we're sitting," Sneide said. "Our biggest goal is to get kids to state. I don't really care about points. I just want to get kids down there."
