Bemidji Township approves mediation agreement

Email News Alerts

BEMIDJI — Bemidji Township voted unanimously to approve a mediated settlement agreement with the city of Bemidji Tuesday night.

The settlement agreement allows the township to leave the orderly annexation and joint powers agreements that it, along with the city and Northern Township, adopted in 2004. The mediation is contingent on approval by the Bemidji City Council and the Bemidji Township Board.

After voting down the agreement last week that was signed by four councilors, the Bemidji City Council approved the agreement Monday on a 4-3 vote.

All three governments, including Northern Township, must approve any amendments to the annexation and joint powers agreements as well. That would include amendments releasing Bemidji Township as a party to those agreements.

Northern Township board supervisors met Monday and discussed the blurry path that lies ahead, and discussed their options going forward.
