Bemidji tops Moorhead, loses to Fergus Falls in triangular
FERGUS FALLS - Isak Sommer's three-set victory at third singles provided the pivotal point Friday as the Bemidji boys tennis team edged Moorhead 4-3 here.
Earlier Friday the Lumberjacks played well but couldn't match the home team's talent, dropping a 5-2 decision.
"Fergus Falls is a very good team," said BHS coach Mark Fodness. "The top three singles players for Fergus are talented and interchangeable."
Against the Otters Bemidji claimed victories at fourth singles and first doubles.
Noah Holter thumped Jordan Schneeberger 6-0, 6-3 and Adam Holter and Kyle Fodness combined for a 6-4, 6-3 triumph in doubles.
"You hate to lose but when you play matches against teams as talented as Fergus Falls you can only improve," the coach said. "And I think playing Fergus Falls helped us right away in our next meet against Moorhead."
The Spuds stacked their singles lineup in an effort to improve their chances and the tactic almost worked. Sommer, however, spoiled the idea as he won 7-5, 1-6, (10-6) at third singles.
"We had to get a singles win somewhere in the lineup and Isak came through," Fodness said. "And in doubles play we knew we couldn't stumble. And no one did."
Adam Holter and Fodness combined for a 6-1, 6-1 victory while Zach Hewitt and Austin Korczak teamed for a 6-2, 6-2 win at second.
Gabe Heifort and Garret Atteberry capped the doubles sweep with a 6-0, 6-4 triumph at third.
"Playing well against Fergus Falls and beating Moorhead is a good way to start the weekend," Fodness said.
Bemidji (6-5) returns to action Monday when it hosts Crookston at 3 p.m.
