Bemidji swimmer Hoven takes 2nd, 3rd at state meet
Dylan Hoven ended his Bemidji High school swimming career in style as the senior sprinter finished second in the 50-yard freestyle and third in the 100 free Saturday at the state swimming meet hosted by the University of Minnesota.
His efforts, and those of his teammates Adam Falk, Nick Nyberg and Nick Gubbels, combined for 69 team points and a 12th-place finish at state.
Fergus Falls won the Class A title with 205, edging St. Thomas Academy which tallied 204.
"Everybody swam very well and placed as high as they could," said Lumberjacks coach Woody Leindecker. "Placing 12th as a team is a very good performance."
Hoven renewed his rivalry with Cameron Hyde of Sartell in both the 50 and 100 and Hyde held the upper hand, winning the 50 and placing second to Mike Hurley of Fergus Falls in the 100.
Hyde was unbeatable in the 50 as he set a Minnesota high school record with a time of 20.61. Hoven established a personal record and a BHS record by finishing in 21.12.
"Being disappointed always comes with finishing second but I swam my fastest time so I have to be pleased as well," Hoven said. "Cameron (Hyde) is 6-6 and I'm 5-10 and he has the arm length that I don't have. He can us that length to stretch and he doesn't have to take as many strokes as I do.
"He has the advantage but I swam my best so I'm satisfied," Hoven added.
"You can't coach height," Leindecker said. "Hyde is a beast and being 6-6 gives him a huge advantage."
In the 100 free Hoven had another career best time of 47.35 and placed third. Hurley and Hyde dueled for first place and Hurley was the winner, hitting the wall in 45.34. Hyde was a whisker back at 45.48.
Falk and Nyberg opened the meet by finishing 13th and 16th in the 200 free. Both were a little slower than their times in Friday's preliminaries as Falk was clocked in 1:53.04 and Nyberg in 1:54.41.
Nyberg, however, moved up two spots in the 500 free as he finished 12th in 5:07.49. The senior was 14th after the preliminary round.
In the 200 free relay Hoven, Falk, Nyberg and Gubbels captured ninth in 1:31.09 and the same group was 13th in the 400 free with a time of 3:23.79.
"It's been a fun year and what I'm going to remember the most is hanging with the guys," Hoven said. "Everyone gave it everything he had at state and Saturday was a very good day."
