Bemidji State women's hockey team set for Wisconsin series
The Bemidji State women's hockey team opens WCHA play this weekend with a two-game road series at Wisconsin.
Game times are Friday at 7:07 p.m. and Sunday at 2:07 p.m.
The Beavers are 1-1 to start the season after splitting last weekend's series at Wayne State. BSU won the first game 3-0 and lost the second game 4-2.
Tomcikova earned the shutout in the first game and was named the WCHA defensive player of the week for the effort.
Bemidji State captain Erin Cody was happy with the team's overall performance last weekend. She pointed to the power play and the amount of shots put on goal.
"I think our power play right now at the start is ahead of where it was last year," Cody said. "Defensively we're also playing with some more confidence and that's going to help because I think Wisconsin's a very good team."
Wisconsin enters the weekend 2-0 overall and is the No. 5 ranked team in the country. The Badgers return coach Mark Johnson, Hilary Knight and Meghan Duggan after missing last year to the Olympics.
BSU split the season series with Wisconsin last year 2-2.
The Beavers are also working to integrate freshmen into the team and captain Annie Bauerfeld said the process so far is going well.
"In the third period of the second game we started to really play Beaver hockey and the freshmen caught on," Bauerfeld said. "Wisconsin's going to be tough and we're going to have to play defense before offense."
While BSU is the only varsity team playing Friday, all squads except the hockey teams are in regular season action on Saturday.
On Saturday: The BSU men's golf team will play at the Twin Cities Classic at Elk River Country Club, the women's cross country team will compete at Minnesota-Duluth's Pine Hill Invitational at Carlton, the women's golf team will play in the NSIC Fall Classic, the volleyball team plays at Minnesota Duluth and the football team plays at Concordia-St. Paul.
The only BSU squad playing at home this weekend is the soccer team. The Beavers host Northern State on Saturday and the University of Mary on Sunday. Both game times are set for 1 p.m.
The BSU men's hockey team will play in the annual green-white intrasquad scrimmage game at 2:07 p.m. at the Bemidji Regional Event Center.
The game will be part of the ribbon-cutting ceremony and the open house set to begin at 12:30 p.m. The BREC events and game are free and open to the public.
