Special teams made the difference in Saturday's women's hockey game between the Bemidji State team and St. Cloud State. The Huskies scored two power-play goals and two short-handed goals to earn a 5-2 Western Collegiate Hockey Association win over the Beavers.
The decision left the teams with a weekend split. Bemidji State fell to 4-8-2 overall and 3-3-2-2 in the WCHA.
The Beavers started the game off sluggish, being outshot in the first period 14-5. St. Cloud State scored on its first shot of the game after Meaghan Pezon intercepted a pass in the defensive zone.
"They totally outplayed us and we didn't seem very interested in playing," said Bemidji State head coach Steve Sertich. "But the good news was that we were only down one after the first."
Bemidji State tied the game on Erin Cody's goal early in the second period. But St. Cloud State answered with back-to-back power-play goals to take a 3-2 lead. Sadie Lundquist scored her second goal of the weekend on a rebound from a shot taken by Cody to bring the Beavers back within one heading into the final period.
"We always battle back and that's a credit to our players," Sertich said. "It's just too bad that we couldn't take advantage of the power plays that we had."
Special-teams trouble would haunt the Beavers in the third period as St. Cloud State scored two short-handed goals on the same power-play opportunity for the Beavers. One of the short-handed goals was also an empty netter.
