Bemidji State women edge Mavericks 4-3

MANKATO – Sadie Lundquist snapped a 3-3 deadlock with a power play goal 11:50 into the third period and the tally lifted the Beavers to a 4-3 victory Friday at Minnesota State. BSU had taken a 3-0 lead midway through the second stanza but the Mavericks eventually tied the game to set the stage for Lundquist’s game-winner. Kaitlyn Tougas started the Beavers on their winning ways as she scored 1:29 into the action courtesy of Lundquist’s feed. At the 12:16 mark Natasha Kostenko connected on a power play to up the lead to 2-0. Emily Erickson and Lundquist assisted on the tally. Ivanna Bilic provided a 3-0 cushion 7:13 into the middle stanza as she beat Maverick goalie Danielle Butters with help from Tougas and Lundquist. The home team began its rally 13:55 into the second period when Lauren Zrust scored and goals by Melissa Klippenstein 5:30 into the third period and by Lauren Smith five minutes later tied the game. A little more than a minute later, however, Lundquist scored on the power play. Emily Erickson and Kostenko assisted on the goal. Jessica Havel tended BSU’s net and made 26 saves. Butters finished with 30 saves. Friday’s victory snapped a seven-game losing streak and upped BSU’s record to 3-8-2 overall and 2-6-1 in the WCHA. The Beavers and Mavericks conclude their series at 3 p.m. today.
