Bemidji State sports notebook: BSU basketball teams head south to Winona, Upper Iowa
The Bemidji State basketball team remains on the road this weekend for a pair of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference games.
The Beavers face No. 17 Winona State on Friday and Upper Iowa on Saturday in a pair of 8 p.m. games.
The Beavers enter the weekend 6-2 (1-1 NSIC) after splitting the first two conference games last weekend. BSU lost to Moorhead 77-57 last Friday but recovered for a 69-44 win at Crookston on Saturday.
James Ellisor had 19 points and six rebounds both games.
The six wins in eight games for the Beavers marks the fastest BSU has reached six wins under Bowen. Last season it took BSU 12 games to reach six wins.
Winona State comes into the weekend 6-1 (1-0 NSIC) and Upper Iowa is 3-2 (0-1 NSIC).
Winona beat Upper Iowa 84-57 in Fayette last Saturday.
The BSU women's basketball team faces Winona State and Upper Iowa this weekend.
The women precede the BSU men's games with 6 p.m. starts.
The Beavers enter the weekend 3-3 (1-1 NSIC) after splitting the opening conference games last weekend. BSU defeated MSU, Moorhead 75-68 last Friday and lost to Minnesota-Crookston 82-66 on Saturday.
BSU was led by a pair of sophomores. Morgan Lee had 19 points in the win over the Dragons, and Kate Warmack averaged 15 points and 4.5 rebounds per game in both games.
Winona State enders the weekend on a six-game winning streak. The Warriors are 6-1 on the year and 1-0 in NSIC play after defeating Upper Iowa 77-74 last Saturday. The Peacocks are 0-5 (0-1 NSIC) on the season.
The BSU women's track and field team opens the 2012 indoor season on Saturday at the College of St. Scholastica Opener in Duluth.
BSU will play against Wisconsin-Superior, Minnesota-Duluth and Northern Michigan.
Scheff, Leonhardt honored
Bemidji State senior football players Brody Scheff and junior tight end Brian Leonhardt were recently named to the Capital One Academic All-America Division II Second Team.
Scheff (3.65 GPA in business) and Leonhardt (3.68 GPA in business administration) are the first BSU football student-athletes to be named to an academic All-America team and the 16th and 17th at Bemidji State to earn academic All-America honors dating back to the early 1970s.
Bemidji State University had 24 student-athletes selected to the 2011 Fall Academic All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Team.
BSU's 24 representatives on the 433-member All-Academic team ranked 11th in the 14-team NSIC.
Bemidji State's fall contingent was led by the football team's 13 selections.
