BEMIDJI -- The Bemidji State softball team used 11 hits and strong performance from senior pitcher Courtney Anderson to defeat Concordia-St. Paul 7-1 in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday.
The Golden Bears took the second game 5-1.
The Beavers are 10-27 (3-15 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference). They are scheduled to host St. Cloud State for two games starting at noon today.
The Beavers' game one hitting outburst was led by three hits apiece from senior Megan Beard and freshman Summer Monsrud.
Anderson shut out the visitors on one hit through four innings before giving up the only run in the fifth. She finished with a five-hitter.
BSU's bats came alive in the second inning. Sophomore Nicole Dupay doubled in the first run and Hannah Benzie scored on a passed ball for a 2-0 lead.
The Beavers added another run in the bottom of the third. Monsrud led off the inning for BSU with a bunt single and scored on a single by Kayla Babinski.
BSU put two more runs on the scoreboard in the fourth. Monsrud doubled and scored on an error, and Beard singled and later scored to make it 5-0.
The Golden Bears finally got a run off Anderson in the fifth, but Bemidji State padded its lead with two more runs in the sixth inning. Monsrud put down another bunt single with one out and scored on a Beard single up the middle. A Benzie infield single scored Beard to make it 7-1 and that would end up being the final score.
In game two of the day, the Beavers and Golden Bears were scoreless through six innings.
But Concordia scored five runs in the top of the seventh and held the Beavers to one run in the bottom of the inning.
