Bemidji State soccer team tops UMD 1-0 in home finale
BEMIDJI — Tiffany VanHaaften scored her fourth goal of the season and Sonja Barr made nine saves for her sixth shutout of the season to lead the Bemidji State University soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Minnesota Duluth in NSIC play Friday afternoon at Chet Anderson Stadium.
The Beavers final home match of the 2013 season proved to be a success as they earned the first home victory over UMD since the program began in 1995. BSU capped its first season at Chet Anderson Stadium with a 7-2-0 record.
Bemidji State took a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute of play. Abby Nyquist got the scoring play started when she cleared traffic in front of the net with a throw in. VanHaaften was on the back side and beat the goalkeeper to the far post for what would eventually stand as her team-leading third game-winning goal of the season.
Midway through the second half BSU would take advantage of another set-play opportunity. Sam Lumberg booted a free kick into a scrum in front of the UMD goal and Jessie Voeller would connect to put the ball on goal, but a Bulldog defender denied the senior and BSU a two-goal lead.
Despite BSU being outshot 28-8 VanHaaften’s goal would be the only offense of the day for either team.
The Beavers improve to 12-5-0 on the season and 9-5-0 in NSIC play. The team travels to St. Cloud to battle the Huskies in the 2013 regular season finale Sunday at 1 p.m.
