Bemidji State soccer team tops North Dakota in opener

GRAND FORKS, N.D. - The Bemidji State soccer team started the 2010 season with a 3-1 win over North Dakota Friday afternoon.

All the scoring came in the second half with Jessie Voeller, Ashlee Ellefsen and Kara Smyth scoring for the Beavers.

Voeller opened the scoring in the 49th minute and Ellefsen made it 2-0 Bemidji State in the 56th minute. Jamie Ford assisted on both of the goals.

Alex Zarling scored North Dakota's lone goal in the 69th minute to cut BSU's lead to 2-1.

Smyth's insurance goal in the 73rd minute came off a corner kick.

Abby Kjonaas and Samantha Ross split the goaltending duties and each had five saves in the win.

BSU (1-0-0) hosts Viterbo at 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon in the home opener at BSU Soccer Field.
