Bemidji State notebook: Baseball team splits with Upper Iowa, golf team third at NSIC championships
The Bemidji State baseball team split a NSIC doubleheader with Upper Iowa Friday in Fayette, Iowa.
Upper Iowa University got least one RBI from six different players to pick up a 9-0 victory over Bemidji State in Game 1.
In Game 2, the Beavers scored the first five runs of the game and held on for a 5-3 win.
In Game1, the Peacocks started fast and jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning and a 4-0 lead after four innings.
Upper Iowa blew the game open in the fifth inning to take an 8-0 lead.
Brock Spangenberg's home run in the seventh inning made it 9-0 and Upper Iowa's Brian Solemsaas (3-3) pitched the entire way for the complete game shutout.
Brent Vollbrecht (2-4) took the loss for BSU. He worked 4 2-3 innings, allowing seven runs on eight hits. Only one of the runs were earned.
Bryan Buhr and Ryan Gebur pitched the out the rest of the game for BSU.
Ryan Bohannan and Josh Juntunen both went 2-for-3 in the game to lead BSU offensively.
Bemidji State grabbed a 5-0 lead after four innings in Game 2.
Josh Silvernagel plated Paul Newman and P.J. McIntee to put Bemidji State up 2-0 in the second inning.
In the fourth, BSU took advantage of two UIU errors to score three runs off two hits.
Paul Newman, Bohannan and McIntee scored in the in the inning to make it 5-0.
Ryan Sander picked up his first win of his career (1-3) as he pitched 5 2-3 innings. He gave up two runs off eight hits with two strikeouts.
Randy Amos and Justin Huether came out of the bullpen to preserve the lead for BSU.
Bohannan went 2-for-2 from the plate with a RBI while Silvernagel was 1-for-3 with two RBI in the win for the Beavers.
Bemidji State saw its season mark move to 10-23 overall and 3-12 in the NSIC after the split, while Upper Iowa's season mark moved to 13-16 overall and 7-5 in the NSIC.
The Beavers and Peacocks will wrap up the four-game series today with a noon doubleheader in Fayette.
LAKE CITY -- The Bemidji State University men's golf team is in third place after the first round of the 2008-09 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Championships at The Jewel Golf Course.
The Beavers, led by James Foss (+2, 73) and Derek Harris (+2, 73), wrapped up the first day with a team score of 296, six strokes off the pace set by St. Cloud State (290).
Jon Emerson, who has Augustana College in eighth place, has a one-shot lead for medallist honors entering the second round of the event after carding a 70 (-1). Harris and Foss's 73 have them tied for 10th in the tournament.
The final 18 holes of the event are scheduled for Saturday, April 11 at Jewel Golf Course in Lake City, Minn.
