Bemidji State men's hockey: St. Cloud State power play goals, Hanowski hat trick sink Beavers
ST. CLOUD - Ben Hanowski scored three goals and St. Cloud State scored three times on the power play in a 6-3 win over the Bemidji State men's hockey team Friday night at the National Hockey Center.
Matt Read scored first to give Bemidji State an early 1-0 lead, but St. Cloud State roared back with four straight goals to take a 4-1 lead into the third period.
Jordan George and Ian Lowe scored back-to-back goals in the third period to briefly cut SCSU's lead to 4-3.
Drew LeBlanc, Garrett Roe and Aaron Marvin also scored for the Huskies. LeBlanc had three assists in the game.
Bemidji State goalie Mathieu Dugas had 27 saves in his second straight start and SCSU goalie Mike Lee had 23 saves.
Bemidji State remained winless on the season and fell to 0-4-1 overall (0-4-1 WCHA). St. Cloud State won back-to-back games for the first time this season and improved to 4-4-1 overall (2-1 WCHA).
The Beavers and Huskies wrap up the weekend series today at 7:07 p.m. in St. Cloud.
The story of the game was special teams. Bemidji State's penalty kill entered the game ranked last in the WCHA with a kill rate of 69 percent and the Huskies went 3-for-7 on the power play in the win.
"We're still trying to figure out how to kill consistently and we can't be as aggressive as we used to be," Bemidji State head coach Tom Serratore said. "We're just a work in progress on the penalty kill and it bit us in the tail a little bit tonight. I'm proud of how we came back in the third period and made a game out of it."
Despite last year's 2-1-1 record in games played on an Olympic-sized ice sheet, BSU's all-time record on the larger playing surface dropped to 5-29-3.
The first 10 minutes of the game was all Bemidji State.
The Beavers scored first on Read's third goal of the season. Jake Areshenko took George's cross-ice pass at the blue line and his shot was deflected by Read into the net 3:11 into the game.
LeBlanc was the first on the board for the Huskies when his wrist shot found enough room under Dugas' arm for the short side power-play goal at 12:04.
That goal switched the momentum of the first period and Hanowski, a Pittsburgh Penguins draft pick, put the Huskies up 2-1 on a power-play goal three minutes later. He deflected Brett Barta's shot from the blue line past Dugas at 15:13.
St. Cloud State won the second period with a pair of power play goals in the second period.
Hanowski scored his second of the game off a LeBlanc feed at 6:08 of the second period and Roe scored from the edge of the net at 8:33 to give the Huskies a 4-1 lead.
The Beavers struggled to generate consistent scoring opportunities in the second period and were outshot 11-7.
The Beavers rebounded in the third period. George scored his team-high fourth goal of the season when he took Read's pass across crease and chipped the puck in for the score on the far side of the net for the power play goal at 7:21.
Lowe cut St. Cloud State's lead to 4-3 just over two minutes later when he batted down a rebound with his hand and chipped the puck over Lee for his first goal of the year.
But Aaron Marvin killed the comeback when he scored SCSU's insurance goal at 10:54 of the third period to put the Huskies back up 5-3. Hanowski earned his hat trick goal with an empty-net score with 1:58 to play and iced the win for SCSU.
