Bemidji State men's hockey: Beavers beat Robert Morris 5-3 in series opener
Bemidji State sophomore Matt Read had three points and goaltender Matt Dalton posted 25 saves as the Bemidji State men's hockey team topped Robert Morris University 5-3 Friday in Pittsburgh.
Read had a goal and a pair of assist to help the Beavers (10-13-0, 6-3-0 CHA) top RMU in the first meeting of the year between the two teams.
A wild first period had the Beavers jumping out to a 2-0 lead with the Colonials (5-14-4, 1-4-2 CHA) coming back to tie with a pair of goals in just 29 near the end of the period.
The teams then traded power play goals early in the second to remain tied at 3-3. The Beavers then got the eventual game winner, again on the power play, from Brandon Marino near the nine minute mark of the second.
Read added an insurance goal at 3:17 of the third to ice the game for the Beavers.
"It was a weird game with a strange feel to it," said Bemidji State head coach Tom Serratore. "It was wide open the first two periods with no hitting, along with lots of back and forth action."
The Beavers then controlled the third to ice the victory.
"We played pretty well in the third period with good clock management and keeping the puck alive. It was a good period for us," Serratore reported.
The Beavers took care of business early offensively, taking a 2-0 lead as Matt Francis scored from point blank range at 2:59 with defender Graham McManamin adding another at 12:54.
Just when it looked like it would be a game that the Beavers would control from start to finish, the Colonials responded. Jason Towsley and Chris Margott scored in less then 30 seconds to tie the game, the second coming with just 1:25 remaining in the period.
RMU's Matt Krug took an ill-advised boarding penalty with just 15 seconds remaining in the period and the Beavers made him pay.
With the penalty carrying over to the second period, BSU freshman defender Brad Hunt scored on a blast from the high slot just 1:20 into the frame.
Once again the Colonials responded with Margott getting his second of the night, this one on the power play, a little over two minutes later. But that was to be it for RMU on the night.
Marino put the Beavers ahead for good at 9:19 of the second with another power play goal.
Read scored the lone goal of the final period as the Beavers went on to win and set up a potential road sweep.
"Winning on Friday is huge," said Serratore. "But we're greedy; we want to win (tonight) as well. But we know Robert Morris is going to come out fired up"
Read led the Beavers with a three point night, scoring a goal and two assists.
"He's our best player and we rely on him a lot," Serratore reported. "It was good to see him play so well."
The teams conclude the series tonight in a 6:35 p.m. start.
