Bemidji State men's basketball: Moorhead edges BSU in conference opener

The Bemidji State men's basketball team lost the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference opener Friday night, losing 73-71 to Minnesota State University Moorhead at BSU Gymnasium.

Bryce Tesdahl had a chance to force overtime for the Beavers, but his shot was blocked by Moorhead's Alex Novak under the basket with two seconds remaining and Novak came down with the rebound to seal the win for the Dragons.

The game was a tight contest throughout and featured 11 tie scores. The last tie score was 70-70 with 1:28 remaining.

BSU took a 71-70 lead with 1:10 remaining when Seth Haake made one of his two free throws.

But the lead was short lived as Moorhead went back down on the court on its next posession and Jerome Nelson hit a 3-pointer to give the Dragons the lead it would not surrender.

Bemidji State junior Patrick Cassidy led the Beavers in scoring Friday night with a team and game-high 20 points. Haake had 16 points and Tesdhal added 12 points for the Beavers.

Jake Driscoll and Andrew VanHavermaet scored 14 points to lead Moorhead.

Bemidji State wraps up weekend play against Minnesota-Crookston at 7 p.m. Saturday night at BSU Gymnasium.

Bemidji State played its first game since the suspensions of juniors Sergej Baskow, Jimmy Johnson and Brady Fairbanks.

The three were suspended indefinitely on Tuesday by BSU head coach Matt Bowen for violating the BSU Student-Athlete Code of Conduct.

The Beavers trailed the game 38-36 at halftime.

Moorhead won the game with reserves as the Dragons' bench outscored the Bemidji State bench 33-16.

BSU was outrebounded in the game 45-30.
